  • Dedicate group work and quiet reading spaces
  • More power outlets

  • A new Art Library
  • A new Special Collections Facility

Construction is scheduled to begin January 2012. You’ll start seeing many changes around the building over the next few months as we prepare for construction.

In celebration of our three millionth volume the UCSB Library is hosting an exhibit called “Exploring the Boundaries:  The Artist Book”.

The displays are open to the public and are located in the Department of Special Collections on the 3rd floor of Davidson Library, the exhibit area in the 1st floor hallway of Davidson Library, and in the lobby of the Arts Library.

Works displayed include items from the library collections, as well as those by UCSB faculty, current students, and alumni.

The three-millionth volume, “Trees” by Charles Hobson, will be on exhibit in Special Collections on a limited basis.

Help Create Our 3,000,001st Volume!

Posted by UCSB Library on November 8, 2010

Help us celebrate our 3 millionth volume by contributing a page to a communal book.  We will bind your page together with others created by UCSB students, staff and faculty to create a unique book for the library collection.

To design a page for the book, visit our project table near the Reference/Information Desk in either Davidson or the Arts Library beginning Monday, Nov. 8 at 1 pm.  Just bring your ideas — we will supply special paper, pens, stickers and other art supplies.

Submit your completed page by Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 4 pm so that we can be sure it gets added to the final volume.

Free Public Lecture on Artists’ Books

Posted by UCSB Library on November 4, 2010

Book artist Charles Hobson will be giving a free public lecture titled “Reflecting on the Making of Artist’s Books” on Wednesday, November 10 at 4 p.m. in the University Center’s State Street Room.

Our 3 millionth volume is an artist’s book by Hobson that challenges the traditional idea of a “book.”  His elegant volume  is a beautiful and sophisticated work of art and literature that showcases the poem “Trees” by W. S. Merwin.  It  incorporates elements of both classic and cutting-edge book design, photography, and creative use of light.

For more information about Charles Hobson, visit the artist’s website.
